Merlot du Marin
Final Year Project
The Purpose
From a young age, I’ve had an interest in branding, packaging and advertising. This project aimed to lean into the skills I developed while completing my degree in digital arts. Initially focusing on marketing a new product and working in the Adobe Suite, I decided to focus on getting out of my comfort zone - nurturing new skills and software like 3D Modelling/Simulations and Video Editing. The goal of this project was to produce adverts that mirror those already in the industry.
Enjoy!
My Goal
In this project my goal was to bring the innovation and opulence of Whiskey and Liqueur bottles to the wine industry through a sleek yet unique vessel. Aiming to evoke a sense of luxury and high quality, I have created two short adverts to showcase this (the use of headphones is advised).
The Story
Merlot du Marin translates to Sailor's Merlot aiming to marry both linguistic allure and historical resonance.
Merlot is a widely grown red wine grape variety. Its name is derived from the French word "merle," meaning blackbird, referencing the grape's dark blue colour and the blackbird's fondness for eating the grapes.
Sailors and wine have had a long intertwined history of distribution and interdependence. Sailors have played a significant role in the development and trade of wine. Coastal areas often have favourable climates for grape cultivation, and proximity to water facilitates transportation, allowing wines to be exported around the globe.
Frequently, wine and other forms of alcoholic beverages were used as a source of sustenance as due to its alcohol content, wines and beers were able to quench their thirsts whilst also providing a small amount nutritional benefits.
Merlot du Marin pays homage to the rich history of the relationship between sailors and wine that supersedes the stereotype of excessive drunkenness.
